Lean Thoughts

Lean Thoughts, a weekly e-newsletter, was started to keep the members of the Lean Consortium connected. The purpose of the e-newsletter is to increase the ability to communicate and share best practices with our readers. We attempt to restrict the length of the newsletter to just two pages of valuable content that can be applied and shared within your organization.

This week's edition

By Richard Kunst

President and CEO

We have been busy applying Lean Methodologies within a dominant administrative environment recently.  As we implemented Timed Delivery Routes, it was amazing how quickly “batching” became visible and how the cadence of flow was reflected in the frequency of “mail runs”, some simple tweaking will dramatically increase throughput and Process Lead Time ... imagine if you took a similar approach within your operation.

The following information was shared through an e-mail ... thought we would share

This is a very timely piece as we witness turmoil, anger, dishonesty and just plain bad behaviour throughout our daily lives, both on the home front and abroad. Some good guidance for our children.

Lessons from the Japanese
What can the world, learn from the Japanese, who are patiently and ably bearing the brunt of nature's fury, due to their precarious location on the ring of fire (Volcano, Fault Lines, Tectonic Plate Edge).

1. THE CALM
Not a single visual of chest-beating or wild grief. Sorrow itself has been elevated.

2.THE DIGNITY
Disciplined queues for water and groceries. Not a rough word or a crude gesture.

3. THE ABILITY
The incredible architects, for instance. Buildings swayed but didn't fall.

4. THE GRACE
People bought only what they needed for the present, so everybody could  get something.

5. THE ORDER
No looting in shops. No honking and no overtaking on the roads. Just understanding.

6. THE SACRIFICE
Fifty workers stayed back to pump sea water in the N-reactors. How will they ever be repaid?

7. THE TENDERNESS
Restaurants cut prices. An unguarded ATM is left alone. The strong cared for the weak.

8. THE TRAINING
The old and the children, everyone knew exactly what to do. And they did just that.

9. THE MEDIA
They showed magnificent restraint in the bulletins. No silly reporters. Only calm reportage.

10.THE CONSCIENCE
When the power went off in a store, people put things back on the shelves and left quietly.

Can we share these virtues with our Children, Family and Friends in the respective positions/ professions??
(This courtesy of sharing valuable information might go a long way in reminding people about the path of propriety.)

Regards,
